A good day at the office for new seasonal ranger

As I woke for my first day as a seasonal ranger at Kakadu I had a few nervous butterflies.

On the drive to work I spotted red-tailed black cockatoos picking through the remnants of last night’s burnt landscape, and an agile wallaby darted across the road, making me smile and helping to calm the nerves.

Driving into Nourlangie I was amazed once more by the sheer beauty of the area – the contrast of the red rock and the vivid green of the early dry season landscape is picture worthy.

Amazingly, all that I had learnt in training came flooding back to me as I stood in front of visitors to deliver my first talk! It was made easier of course by the wonderful enthusiasm of my first audience.

The next day I enjoyed a brilliant red sunset over the Nadab Floodplain with visitors at the top of Ubirr. Another ‘wow’ moment!

On the drive home, as I approached Magela Creek crossing, I spotted two big bright eyes shining in my headlights and a small saltwater croc wandered across the road. I’ve never had to give way to a crocodile before. ‘How awesome was that?’ I thought, as I drove on. Not a bad day at the office!
