It’s not just the likes of Beyonce who get new species named after them! A new species of native truffle found on Neds Corner Station during a recent Bush Blitz has been named in honour of Trust for Nature property managers, Colleen and Peter Barnes.

The new species will be called Agaricus colpeteus sp. nov. in honour of the keen naturalists and will be officially described and published in a Fungi of Australia (ABRS) volume on ‘Truffle-like fungi of Australia’, due out in 2013.

Bush Blitz is a biodiversity discovery program between the Australian Government, BHP Billiton and Earthwatch Australia which aims to document the plants and animals across Australia’s National Reserve System.

Neds Corner Station is managed for conservation as part of the National Reserve System by Trust for Nature.
