Crab named after Christmas Island ranger

The newly named _Orcovita orchardorum_ and Max feeding frigate birds

Christmas Island National Park ranger Max Orchard now shares his surname with a recently discovered species of cave-dwelling crab — Orcovita orchardorum. During a recent visit to Christmas Island a team of world-renowned crab experts bestowed the honour, recognising the work that Max has done over many years managing the red crab migration —and the care that he and wife Bev have given to injured and orphaned seabirds. Another recently-discovered cave crab — Orcovita hicksi — was named after co-author of the original Christmas crab book, former Government Conservator John Hicks.
