Aquatic collecting in Canberra

You would not normally expect to collect Canberra plants by boat - but after the breaking of the drought, our herbarium staff spotted invasive waterlilies from the banks of Lake Burley Griffin.

Nymphaea mexicana | Parks Australia

They’d noticed the waterlily leaves while surveying ACT plants several years ago, but this is the first year they’ve been observed in flower. So they took to the water to collect specimens as part of the census of ACT flora. The tentative identification is Nymphaea Mexicana (Nymphae is a genus not included before) and from aerial photographs it appears to be spreading. The information will be passed on to the ACT Government for action.
